The Onion's A.V. club talks about Wide Eyes/ Sean Anonymous' Birthday show 02/02/2012

Here's what they had to say:

"Seven years in, veteran Twin Cities indie hip-hop group Wide Eyes seem to be gaining some momentum. Bolstered by a strong first showing in the album Hands Tied, and paired with a tried and tested live energy, they’re a hardworking four-piece with sincere flows laid over punchy beats and great DJ work. Moving from being a house party act to playing festivals and sharing bills with the likes of Blueprint and Juice, Wide Eyes feel more mature now. They’re still fun, but more polished now, and their sound can fill up a room. With an EP due to be released and a tour undoubtedly in the works, catching these guys now for 5 bucks when it’s member Sean Anonymous’ birthday to boot is a safe bet for a Friday night. "

That time of year is finally here!

Our good friend Phillip Morris' birthday is this Friday... And to celebrate, we're going down to Chicago to make rap music at people.

We've had the pleasure to play a couple shows down in Chicago with Mr. Morris.

Shit gets crazy.

Mid October Chicago Minneapolis Show Cluster (Back & Forth & Back & Forth) 10/19/2011

Hey there friendos.... Sean Anonymous here...

It's been a while since my last blog/story/thing... And believe me, I've missed writing non-fictional life-describing words for you to look at.

But now I'm back... and I plan on doing some writing/s about the shows this month.

And prolly next month... and hopefully forever after that.
Picture

This last week was one of the best/busiest/hectic weeks I've ever experienced.

It was great.

The bulk of what I'm talking about will be the thursday, friday, saturday... Chicago, Minneapolis, Chicago show cluster. But I'm going to take it back to Tuesday and start with some stuff about the "Fast Forward" video shoot.

Here goes:

Tuesday morning, I woke up at 9 o'clock... Which is way earlier than I would choose to wake up usually, but you gotta do what you've got to do, right?

I was greeted by the talented film makers: Dave Wilson, Ryan Thompson, and John (i forget his last name)... and we immediately started shooting.

It was real nice out... want proof?... Here's a picture:
Picture
We shot for about 8-9 hours... Mainly outdoor shots... Lots of me walking, and trying my best to look cool.

Turns out that I had some acting to do in the video, which I'm always weird about...but I think I did alright.

We got done around 8 O'clock... and I slept...

On to the next one...

Wednesday consisted of mom-visiting, root canal getting, and bag packing.

I woke up at 8 in the morning (i'm pretty proud of myself), and biked to the bus stop.

Bussed to my moms. Talked with the moms. Ate some curry with the moms.

Noticed that these are the only two items on my mom's fridge:
Picture
Mom Anonymous represents.... Turns out, that she also listens to Wide Eyes... a lot... This was the second time I've gone to visit her, and caught her bumping hands tied... Dope shit mom... Dope shit.

Then I bussed back to my bike and preceded to the U of M to get my teeth fucked with.

It was cool tho... My dentist is a cool dude... and I was so tired, that I slept through most of the root canal anyways.

At the end, my dentist bought both of the Wide Eyes albums. (Hip hop is every where)
Picture
After the root canal came a quick stop at the hardtimes for biscuits & gravy.

A quick meeting with DJ Name to put together a set for the Saturday Chicago Show.

Then went to Cause to watch Carnage & Crunchy Kids... (They both killed it).

Then sleep.

Which brings us to:

Thursday Morning

8 A.M.

Wake up... quick last minute packing... and then off to the megabus.
Picture
8 hours later, the megabus is mega-stuck in Chicago traffic... This will be the first of 3 times i get stuck in Chicago traffic this weekend.

That shit mega-sucked.

To add insult to injury, we drove right by the train stop for the venue... I pictured what would happen if I jumped out the window, and climbed onto the train platflorm.... Sooner or later we made it to downtown .

Then some amount of time afterwards, I made it to Subterranean.
Picture
Thursday night's show was a cool experience for me.

The first time I performed in Chicago was about 3 years ago at Subterranean. We got to open up for Qwel, I remember it being such a good time, and was hoping that the show would measure up to that show. (Which it did).

It was a real good show... And a great way to kick of the tour that I'm doing with Juice & Spy.
Picture
After the Sub-T show, I walked back to the homegirl Jesse's place and slept for a solid 2 hours.

I had to wake up at 5 A.M. to catch the megabus back to Minneapolis for the 99% in Peavey Plaza rally.

Serious delirium.

(This picture was taken at the stop in Madison, once it was actually light out)
Picture
Get back to Minneapolis at 2 p.m..... Having to perform at the 99% in Peavey Plaza Rally at 2:15.

I had my ride waiting at the megabus stop for me... Made it to Peavey Plaza (outside of orchestra hall) by 2:15... Homie said that I missed my chance to perform. But Leroy (the cats organizing the rally) said I could do a short set after Toki Wright instead of opening up for him.

Toki tore it down (as usual)... Then I performed on the side stage. The crowd was amazing. It felt wonderful to perform for a good cause, and pump everybody up before we march on the Wells Fargo building.
Picture
Directly after the Rally/March... I met up with Dave Wilsen, and started shooting more of the "Fast Forward"  video at some locations downtown... It was real cold, but fun none the less...
Picture
Shot the video until the night time... Then biked over to the Blue Nile for the show with Juice & Spy.

The highlight of the night (in my mind), was freestyling with Juice, Carnage, Spy, & More...

Here's a blurry pic from it:
Picture
Biked home....

Slept a couple hours...

Saturday Morning:
Woke up to a call from Dj Name saying that he's outside my house...

Put on some clean clothes, grabbed some cd's, brushed the teeth, then ran out the door.

Hopped in the car with him & Cyma, and headed back to Chicago for the Pilsen Open Studios fest.

Got stuck in traffic.... again... The homie Phillip Morris asked the band that was going on before us to switch slots with us, and they did. (Shout out to Jugo de Mango)...

but we made it there.... And rocked it.

There's was all sorts of art related craziness going on... this is one of my Favorite pics of the performance:

Here's my second favorite pic of the night.

After the set....

Dj Name, Cyma, and I went back to my sister's place to say what's up... She tossed me her spare keys.

I got to brush the teeth, wash the ol' face, and reapply deoderant... It was great.

Then we headed back to Pilsen for the afterparty, which happened to be in the same spot...

At the after party, most the younger kids in the audience were gone, and they were serving liquor... so there was more people there... and they were getting loose.

I got to hop back on stage with Phillip, and we were joined by spy mc... we performed our track "Room & Space" and then freestyled for a while.

Here's a picture:
Picture
After the after party....

Burrito time! (not the hotel lobby... I should do a remix of that song that's more true to life, and involves burritos)

Dj Name, Spy, Dispute 1, Cyma, Macy, & I all went to this spot down the street to mash on some mexican food... It was the second time I had been to the spot before.... Spy, Djo and I had gone there about a year ago (maybe two?).

And it was just as good as I remembered it. (Maybe I'll look up the name at some point, and repost it... I can't remember right now).

After the burrito, I went back to the venue to grab the rest of my belongings.

Dj Name & Cyma waited outside...

When I got inside, I realized that leaving my backpack on stage may have been a foolish idea.... There was a 13 piece band playing now... And mountains of music equipment surrounding the side of the stage... Not to mention the fact that the whole venue was packed by this point, and the only way I could really make it up to the stage, was by dancing through the huge crowd of people.... (I'm not that good of a dancer).

But I eventually made it there... And after crawling over/under a sea of amps, shakers, hand drums, drum sets, guitars and what not... I made it on to the stage, and was able to retrieve my shit.

About a half hour later I made it back outside... Where Dj Name & Cyma were (somewhat) patiently waiting.

Brainstormed for a bit about what we should do for the rest of the evening... And decided to check out OccupyChi!....

But on the way to catch a cab, I ran into my friend Shannon who I hadn't seen in months.

I convinced the dudes that we should go grab a beer in the area... And so we went to a spot called Simones.

Drank for a while... Talked about life and things... And realized we had to be up in about 5 hours...

Then  caught a cab back to my sisters place.

Sat on her balcony for a while, smoked, and talked about conspiracy theories...

I retired to the room I was staying in. Slept for about 4 hours.

Then we headed back to good ol' Minneapolis.

It feels good to be home.
